Birding in Corfu
HALIKIOPOULOU LAGOON-AIRPORT
Halikiopoulou Lagoon (also known as the airport lagoon) is a striking wetland located just three km south of Corfu Town. It is a key coastal wetland that serves as an important wildlife sanctuary and stopover for migratory and resident birds. About half of the wetland is a designated protected nature reserve and an Important bird area which acts as a vital stopover for migratory and resident birds, including herons and rare egrets.
Getting there: After parking, set Google Maps to the walking starting point. From there, look for the path that follows the small river/canal towards the lagoon. The path isn’t always easy to find and can get quite overgrown depending on the season, so access may sometimes be a little tricky. There is an old metal gate along the way which can be opened, just make sure to close it again behind you.
Public transport:
Blue Bus 2A gets you into the area; from there it’s roughly a 10-minute walk.
