Giant Peacock Moth (Saturnia piri)

The Giant Peacock Moth (Saturnia pyri) is the largest European moth, with a wingspan of up to 20 cm. Despite its size, this nocturnal species relies on camouflage where both sexes share a similar pattern, with a base colour of grey and brown. Each wing has a prominent black eyespot (ocellus) ringed with a yellow and black outline, sometimes with a blue centre.
