African Death's-head Hawk-moth (Acherontia atropos)

The African Death's-head Hawk-moth (Acherontia atropos) is a large, nocturnal moth known for the distinctive skull-like pattern on its thorax and its unusual ability to squeak. Their yellow caterpillars burrow into damp earth where they pupate. Native to Africa, this migratory moth is also a rare but regular visitor to Europe.
