Mantids

Mediterranean (Iris) Mantis (Iris oratoria)

The Mediterranean Mantis (Iris oratoria) is a species of praying mantis native to Southern Europe. It is known for its distinct markings and aggressive defensive behaviour. This involves turning toward the aggressor, rearing up, arching its back, waving its forelegs, flashing its colourful hindwing eyespots and making a noise by scraping its wings together. It can be identified by a red-orange spot found on the underside of the fourth abdominal segment.

The Corfu Nature Website currently contains over 6,000 photographs of  more than 1,100 wildlife species found on Corfu.
