Tree Grayling (Hipparchia statilinus)

A medium sized, brown butterfly in the family Nymphalidae (Brush-footed butterflies)
Flying in July | August | September | October

The Tree Grayling (Hipparchia statilinus) is rather distinct with its light grey colour mottled with brown. There are two large black eyespots with a yellow ring and white centre on the forewing, but only one is normally visible. On the hindwing, a dark area with a black dot at the bottom is an identifying feature. Grayling rarely show their upper wings, usually resting with them closed and displaying the undersides.
