The Holly Blue (Celastrina argiolus) upper wings are bright blue and females can be distinguished by the black wing edges that are very obvious. The under wings are pale blue with small black spots which distinguish them from Common Blue. It is easily identified in early spring, as it emerges well before other blue butterflies and can often be seen in significant numbers on damp or muddy ground..
