Alpine Swift (Tachymarptis melba)

The Alpine Swift (Tachymarptis melba) is in the family Swallows/Swifts and is a large, fast-flying birds which are often seen flying around Corfu Town. They have dark brown upperparts and white underparts, with a distinctive white throat and belly. Known for their remarkable aerial agility, they can spend months in flight, even sleeping on the wing. These birds are migratory, breeding in southern Europe and wintering in Africa. In Corfu, they nest on cliffs and tall buildings, feeding on insects caught in mid-air. They are in the family Swallows/Swifts.
