Click Beetles are famous for their unique "click" mechanism. This involves a spine on the underside of their thorax which snaps violently into a matching groove and produces an audible clicking sound. Within the genus 'Melanotus', many European species look virtually identical on the outside as they all share the same dark reddish-brown to black coloration and elongated body shapes. Accurate identification often requires microscopic examination.
