Planthopper (Issus coleoptratus)

The Planthopper (Issus coleoptratus) is a small, European insect famous for being the first animal known to use mechanical gears in its body. These intermeshing, cog-like structures are found on the hind legs of its nymphs and enable the insect to synchronise its powerful jumps.
