Mantids

Conehead Mantis (Empusa fasciata)

The Conehead Mantis (Empusa fasciata) is a species of praying mantis that is rare in Corfu but native to the Mediterranean area and mostly found in perennial herbs and scrubs. This species of mantis is easily distinguished by its body shape and the protrusion from its crown. Both males and females possess this tall extension from birth, giving them a very 'alien' appearance.
