Hawthorn Fly (Bibio marci)

The Hawthorn fly (Bibio marci), also known as the St. Mark's fly, is a shiny black insect common in Europe, named for its emergence around St. Mark's Day on April 25. Its name also refers to its habit of appearing when hawthorn shrubs are in bloom. The fly has a sluggish, clumsy flight pattern, with its long legs dangling underneath it.
