A large, orange butterfly in the family Nymphalidae (Brush-footed butterflies)
Flying in September | October | November | December
The Plain Tiger (Danaus chrisippus) is a medium-sized butterfly widespread in Asia, Australia and Africa and found in certain locations in Corfu. There is a known subspecies, alcippus, which is a variant infrequently seen in the Mediterranean. It has dark brown forewings and white hind wings which make it very noticeable. The Plain Tiger is believed to be one of the first butterflies depicted in art, a 3500-year-old ancient Egyptian fresco in Luxor features the oldest known illustration of this species.
