Old World Swallowtail (Papilio machaon)
A large, yellow butterfly in the family Papilionidae (Swallowtail and Birdwing butterflies)
Flying in March | April | May | June | July | August | September | October
The Old World Swallowtail (Papilio machaon) or simply 'Swallowtail' (a common name applied to all members of the family, but this species was the first to be given the name) is relatively common in Corfu and easily identified due to its size, flight pattern and yellow colour. The wings are yellow with black veins running through them which form a pattern unlike the other swallowtail species. The distinctive blue edging to the hind wings and the bright red spot on them makes for an easy identification.
