Cliff Mining Bee (Andrena thoracica)

The Cliff Mining Bee (Andrena thoracica) is a large, solitary mining bee, in of the family Andrenidae, found on Corfu. The local population includes both Andrena thoracica and Andrena assimilis species but, as they are almost impossible to tell apart, A. thoracica is the most likely identification. The bees are easily recognised by their reddish-brown, hairy thorax and black abdomen. Active in spring and early summer, females dig nesting burrows in bare soil and gather pollen to provision their brood cells.

The Corfu Nature Website currently contains over 7,000 photographs of  more than 1,200 wildlife species found on Corfu.
